About this tour

Situated at the head of the African Rift Valley, in the Afar Triangle, on the so-called triple point, the Danakil Depression constitutes one of the lowest places on earth; it’s 100 below sea level depression, the direct result of the retreating actions of the Arabian and (two halves of) the African plate. Located thus, the area is especially volatile.

This three days trip will make you to feel like you are on another planet. Step outside your comfortable bed rooms, disconnect your phone from the internet and transform it in to camera to take beautiful landscape pictures, forget your Netflix while you become the main actor on the unforgettable adventure.

Itinerary

Catch the morning flight to Mekele, once the capital of Ethiopia at the time of Yohannes IV (1871-1889), and currently the biggest and the capital for Tigrai Regional State. Up on arrival you will begin the drive to Denakil Depression, having picnic lunch on the way. The dramatic change of the landscape after an hour drive from the Tigrai plateau to the western edge of the Afar Triangle is the beginning of the adventure. On the way meet the Afar people, who reside in three countries, namely -Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti. After settling on your place of stay, by late afternoon drive further to Lake Karum for the best of the sunset. Overnight – Camping (Sky roof)

Early in the morning, after breakfast drive to Dallol, the sulfurous hot springs, acid pools, steaming fissures and salt mountains. The sulfur springs of Dallol are a particular draw, with its stupefying shades of neon green and yellow that hiss forth from the rocky terrain. Then proceed to where you see traditional and local salt mining salt on a vast, hot but beautiful salt field. You will observe all activities of breaking the salt into rectangular pieces and loading them on camels. The journey of caravans from/to the salt field is a particular moment at this desertic and somehow hostile nature. Continue the drive to Erta Ale (the Smocking Mountains) and experiencing change of landscape and temperature which is accompanied by small villages and some palm tree plants along other volcanic landscape features. Once you arrive, begin to hike to the mouth of the lava (613m asl) where you spend the night and enjoy the colorful lava lake illumination. Discover the southern and northern volcano dyke. Overnight – Camping

Early in the morning leave the camp and proceed to Lake Afderfa, one of the two hypersaline lakes of the Danakil Depression, taking a dip here provides welcome relief from the unrelenting Danakil sun. Then drive to Semera, the capital of Afar people, where the airport is.
