Ethiopia’s colorful and fascinating history may be said to be about 4.4 million years’ old- the age of ‘Homo Ramidus Afarensis’, the world’s oldest known upright walking hominid.
Ethiopia is known to have had one of the longest ruling dynasties of the world: the Axum Empire that started in 3rd century BC lasted till 1974. The first king of the Axum dynasty is said to be Cush, the grandson of Noah, or Menelik I, the son of Queen Sheba and King Solomon and the last emperor was Haile Selassie whose rule ended in 1974.
This trip manly gives a highlights of this deep and mysterious history of the country witnessing the ongoing tradition of its people.
Visit Addis Abeba which was founded by Emperor Menilik II at the end of the 19th century and become quickly an African political hub during Emperor Haile Selassie, as the new Organization of Africa headquarters resides in the capital. Begin your visit to the new Contemporary Art Museum, Zoma and drive to Entoto mountain to visit a small museum of the church and the old palace of Emperor Menilik I. Before lunch, discover the old palace of King Haile Selassie with an interesting ethnographic Museum. Lunch at Lucy Gazebo and meet our ancestor Lucy at National Museum and drive to Mercato to see the unique ambiance of traditional and modern Ethiopian Market place. Transfer to Bole Airport for the domestic flight to Bahir Dar – the regional capital of Amharan people - Boat excursion (2 hrs. boat trip) to Zeghe Peninsula - Navigate the biggest lake of Ethiopia, Lake Tana: host several important historical monasteries of Ethiopian orthodox church, built in 13th and 14th century's when the region had been served as a capital to the medieval Ethiopian kings. Aquatic birds like Cormorant, Pelican, Eagret’ Ibis would be another flavor of the lake – Walk in between small households and the sacred, temperate, wild forest with coffee plantations which makes the area UNESCO’s biosphere since 2015 and visit the astonishing church of Ura Kidane Mihret: adored by Gonderian style church paintings, narrates the passion of Jesus and his holy mother. Discover the «mysterious» outlet of Blue Nile at the eastern shore of the lake - Drive to Blue Nile Falls (60 km of gravel route: 2hrs) - Excursion on foot across small villages, an old Portuguese bridge, and electric power plants. Boat cross on Blue Nile – enjoy the gracious and legendary Blue Nile falls, 41m. Bahir Dar - Depart to Gonder (180 km), 2010m - Discover on the way the Amhara’s agrarian ways of life and farm fields - Lunch at Gonder - the Royal City of Gonder – world heritage site, founded by King Fasiledes in 17th Century's - Served as Ethiopian Capital for almost 200 years - Visit the Royal Enclosures: Fasil Ghebi, Fasil's bath, and church of Debre-Birhan Selassie: doubled with attractive Ethiopian traditional architecture and the finest masterpieces of church wall paintings - Diner and Nigh, Hotel, Gonder. Gonder – transfer to Gonder Airport for the 30mts flight to Lalibela which is famous for its 12th-century rock-hewn churches built by king Lalibela as a reason to create African Jerusalem and to protect Ethiopian pilgrims who were treated to death by the new Muslim conquerors of the holly Jerusalem. Lunch - Seven Olives Restaurant - visit the selected churches of Lalibela from the northern and southern group churches, all curved of a single rock and beautifully sculpted with Christian traditions. Dinner and Overnight - Hotel/Lodge at Lalibela.
Morning transfer from Lalibela to the airport for the flight to the oldest capital of Ethiopia - Axum: the cradle place for Ethiopian civilization and served as Ethiopian ancient kings (from 1st .B.C to 8th C.A) and the holly city for Ethiopian Orthodox Church, as a sacred sanctuary for the Arc of Covenant or « Tabot ». Lunch and visit the archaeological sites: Royal Tombs, Stale Parks, and Enda Maryam (resides the « original arch of Covenant ». Dinner and Overnight – Hotel at Aksum
Fly back to Addis in the morning and depending on the arrival time in Addis Abeba, the day is free for some activities including shopping and some more sites in the city to explore. In the evening, before the departure, you will have a dinner in one of the cultural restaurants in Addis with the dance shows from different ethnic groups of Ethiopia.
